For the first time ever, SuperHappyDevHouse is coming to SXSW! Join us for an evening of hacking, revelry, LEGO® MINDSTORMs® roboticking, and good times that the Silicon Valley event is known for the world over.
Don't miss this!
What is SuperHappyDevHouse?
The original idea for SHDH was something like “20% time for people who don’t work at Google” (even though the event wasn’t founded by Googlers). The event has since evolved into a monthly collaborative event for exchanging ideas, working together, and celebrating the spirit of the independent, DIY hacker.
The DevHouse site tells it like it is:
The premier monthly hackathon event that combines serious and not-so-serious productivity with a fun and exciting party atmosphere.
SuperHappyDevHouse is a non-exclusive event intended for creative and curious people interested in technology. We're about knowledge sharing, technology exploration, and ad-hoc collaboration. Come to have fun, build things, learn things, and meet new people. It's called hacker culture, and we're here to encourage it.
SuperHappyDevHouse has been in the media several times (SF Chronicle, CNET, San Jose Mercury News) and is also one of the original inspirations for BarCamp.
Event Details
- When: Sunday, March 13th, 2011 from 7pm to 2am (or close)
- Where: Speakeasy (412 Congress Ave, Austin, TX 78701)
- Who: SXSW Attendees, VIPs, and SuperHappyDevHouse community members
The DevHouse will kick off at 7pm following the transition from the Google Developer Event. We will open the event with welcome remarks, an overview of the venue and what’s happening where and follow with a vivid retelling (and slideshow) of the history of DevHouse, beginning with its roots in Silicon Valley and spreading worldwide. We’ll also describe the LEGO® hackathon taking place on the third floor throughout the event and invite participation. We’ll close by thanking each sponsor and announcing the sponsored drinks; food will be served and all three bars will open.
Around 8:15pm we’ll prep for
lightning talks on the main stage on the first floor. We expect fast-paced, intelligent, funny, and clever talks to run one after another — no more than 5 minutes each — covering subjects like tech hacks, big ideas, best practices, crazy experiences, or other topics that might interest the varied DevHouse audience.
It’s worth pointing out
guidelines for delivering a good lightning talk from the DevHouse site:
Lightning talks are short and efficiently run talks that are useful for developers.
What Lightning Talks aren't:
- They're not a place to pitch your company
- They're not a place to demo your product you think we should all buy
- They're not a place for recruiting
Lightning talks should be interesting to our audience: a bunch of bright people who like to make or break stuff.
Lightning talks must fit the following requirements:
- Talks must be 5 minutes
- You will be timed, please watch your timer for hand signals: 4 fingers = 4 minutes remaining, etc
- You will be mocked, booed and humiliated if you go over your time.
- If your talk has slides, they must be in an open format and sent to the organizer at least 2 hours before your talk.
- Acceptable formats are:
- Another page on the wiki (ideal!)
- PDF
- Flash
- HTML
- Text
- Talks must be approved by the organizer at least 2 hours prior to the start of the Lightning Talks.
You can the slides from some of the past SuperHappyDevHouses, including 34, 33, 32, and 31.
Following the lightning talks, we’ll thank the presenters and the sponsors once more and invite folks to continue hacking and explore the rest of the venue.
We’ll take the stage once more at 11pm to describe the remainder of the event, closing remarks, and to invite everyone to join us for the conclusion of the LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Hackathon up on the third floor.
The event will end at 2am or whenever the bar closes — whichever comes first!
Big shout-out to our sponsors for making this event possible!
